Product Overview
File-based data—spreadsheets, presentations, email, text documents, video and audio files—constitute 80% of most enterprise data. To accommodate the rapid growth of this unstructured information, most enterprises have added dozens or hundreds of storage devices from different vendors over the years while trying to keep administrator headcount flat. The regulatory, legal, and business environments now require that the right unstructured information is available at the right time, while reducing the ever-growing cost of storing this information. A new category of products – Network File Management (NFM), sometimes referred to as NAS Virtualization - has arisen to address these challenges. Attune Systems’ Maestro File Manager™ is the first Network File Management product to dramatically reduce the complexity and cost of both file and storage volume management without interrupting users or taking on risky deployments. Discover, Analyze and Report Storage Usage and Utilization Maestro’s management features have been designed to overcome the problems posed by enterprises that have accumulated many file servers with many different management interfaces – there’s no one place to go to monitor, configure and receive alerts, identify potential problems, and analyze how file services may be improved. Maestro allows administrators to discover file servers and their shares, analyze capacity, performance and availability trends, and report status on an ongoing basis, all from one pane of glass. Maestro’s features include:
With these capabilities, administrators can take actions before problems occur, and they may also configure Maestro to automatically take actions such as adding capacity to a Volume Set when necessary. For example, administrators can:
Manage, Optimize and Automate Data Placement Using Policies Maestro’s powerful Policy IQ™ provides the insight and automation necessary to manage and optimize ongoing file placement based on policies. For example, most enterprises store unstructured content on NAS devices or file servers and organize the information by department or business process. Inside any given department’s file content there are frequently used files that require high availability and performance but the majority of content tends to go out of use as it ages. These old files don’t need to be stored on high cost filers, and may be migrated to lower cost storage. However, because it is hard to predict when a file might be used again, Maestro’s namespace virtualization preserves the location of the file as seen by clients so that even if the file is migrated to a new file server or share it can still be accessed by the same pathname. Maestro’s Policy IQ is the intelligence and the data mover behind an enterprise strategy to incorporate unstructured data into information lifecycle management and tiered storage plans, regardless of storage vendor. These features dramatically reduce the rate at which high-cost storage needs to be purchased, as well as associated software licenses, keeping costs under control. Consolidate, Balance, Tier and Protect Storage Resources By consolidating capacity from multiple shares and file servers, Maestro Volume Sets™ make more efficient use of capacity that otherwise would be stranded in individual shares. Maestro’s Adaptable Striping and Mirroring then balances file content across one or more physical shares to maximize availability or performance of specific content. Volume Sets have several additional advantages over raw file shares:
Simplify Storage Administration and Reduce Operating Costs Managing files and file storage across disparate machines means being able to leverage information about files and file storage into actions implemented across all storage devices. It also means ensuring that those management actions do not interrupt user access to important file content. The Maestro File Manager includes a full complement of management functions that:
